One legend tells of a 13th-century Norse invasion thwarted by a single cry when a soldier stepped barefoot on a thistle, alerting the Scots and turning the tide. From that moment, the thistle became a quiet warrior of the Highlands, a plant that defends itself with every thorn, yet still dares to bloom.
